Close the Performance Gap with Job Aids
A well-designed performance support system can help your workforce to rapidly close skill, knowledge, and performance gaps—and keep them closed!
Here are key steps in creating and implementing a performance support system or, as they’re more commonly called, job aids.
- Do a Front-end Needs Analysis. An effectively designed performance support system requires a front-end, needs analysis to help ensure that a learning or performance support solution will yield desired results fast, for the lowest possible cost.
- Study the Users. To develop a performance support system, an instructional designer must study end-users on the job to determine what they already know and where there are knowledge and skill gaps.
- Identify the best method and media for addressing the problem. After all critical performance gaps are identified, the designer determines which can be solved by beefing up training and which need to be reinforced and made available in an on-demand job aid.
- Make sure all stakeholders are in the loop. Trainers, instructors, and managers must be given the tools and information they need to maintain the learning and performance support solution.
- Test and refine. Ideally, a performance support tool is prototyped, tested, and refined before it is rolled out to all users.
